THANK YOU.
Umbra is a passive shading system for residential homes inspired by the Rhododendron plant and its thermotropic properties. Umbra uses thermotropism as a model to maintain a building’s homeostatic temperature in hot and arid, desert climates prone to intense sunlight. Umbra prevents solar heat gain on the buildings facades and windows by changing its surface structure in response to temperature. Umbra’s surface, is a pattern of bimetal hexagonal pores, that transitions due temperature change. The bimetal alloys have different thermal coefficients, causing the pores, to curl open and close due to changing conditions.
